How to Store Apples
Harvesting and Storing Tips
When harvesting apples, handle them with care to avoid bruises or cuts. Keep the apple stalk intact, as this helps prevent rotting. Only store unblemished apples, as damaged ones won’t keep well.
Short-Term Storage (Up to a Week)
- Place a few apples in a clear freezer bag or paper bag and store in the fridge.
- Don’t let the apples freeze, as this can damage them.
Long-Term Storage (Over Winter)
- Wrap each apple in a single sheet of newspaper.
- Place the apples in single layers on a tray or in an apple rack.
- Store in a cool and humid spot, such as an unheated basement, cellar, or unheated garage.
- Check the apples regularly for any signs of rot.
Best Apple Varieties for Storage
- Sweet varieties: Store for only a few weeks.
- Tart varieties: Can be stored all winter long.
- Early varieties: Best eaten within a fortnight of harvesting.
- Late varieties: Need to ripen in storage for four to five weeks and will then last throughout the winter.
