How to Care for a Terrarium
What is a Terrarium?
A terrarium is a small, enclosed environment that creates a miniature ecosystem for plants. They are often called “bottle gardens” because they can be made in glass jars or bottles. Terrariums are easy to care for and make beautiful additions to any room.
Choosing the Right Location
Where you place your terrarium is important for the plants’ survival.
- Closed terrariums: Place away from windows or in a spot with bright, indirect light.
- Open terrariums: Place on a windowsill or table in full or partial sun.
Watering
- Open terrariums: Water succulents and cacti weekly from March to October with a small amount of water. During winter, water only every six weeks.
- Closed terrariums: Condensation should be visible up to a third of the jar’s height. If it’s higher, remove excess water by opening the terrarium and wiping the inside. If there’s little condensation, add a small amount of water.
Pruning
Trim back any plants that touch the sides of the terrarium. Cut straggly stems and remove any moldy leaves or stems.
Reviving Sick Plants
If plants in a closed terrarium turn brown and look moist, they’re probably getting too much light. Open the terrarium and wipe off excess water. Move it to a shadier spot. If moss looks faded, add a small amount of water. If you see any mold, wipe it off and leave the lid open for a few minutes to allow airflow.
