How to Set Up a Wormery
Introduction
Do you want to turn your kitchen waste into something useful for your garden? A wormery is a great way to do just that! Wormeries are containers that house worms, which eat your fruit and vegetable waste and produce nutritious compost and liquid fertilizer.
Benefits of Using a Wormery
- Reduces kitchen waste
- Creates nutrient-rich compost for your plants
- Produces liquid fertilizer that can be diluted and used to water your plants
- Easy to set up and maintain
What You’ll Need
- Wormery kit
- Brandling worms
- Kitchen waste
Instructions
- Assemble the Wormery
Attach the legs and tap to the base unit. Add a single tray to the base and line it with a sheet of paper.
- Prepare the Worm Bedding
Soak the worm bedding block in warm water until it becomes a loose, crumbly mixture.
- Add the Worm Bedding
Spread the worm bedding evenly over the paper in the tray.
- Add the Worms
Spread the worms over the bedding. They will quickly burrow down into the material.
- Feed the Worms
Cover the worms and bedding with a thin layer of chopped vegetable peelings. As the peelings decompose, the worms will feed on them.
- Maintain the Wormery
Keep the wormery covered and in a warm, sheltered spot. Regularly drain liquid from the tap and dilute it with 10 parts water to use as fertilizer.
Tips
- Move the wormery indoors during winter to protect the worms from frost.
- Chop vegetable peelings into small pieces to make them easier for the worms to eat.
- Avoid putting meat, dairy, or cooked food in the wormery, as these can attract pests.
With a little care and attention, your wormery will provide you with a steady supply of nutrient-rich compost and liquid fertilizer for your garden.
